Different Shapes of Artist Paint Brushes

The artist paint brushes are manufactured depending on the various requirements of the painters. These are like a magic wand, which helps an artist to produce exquisite paintings on the canvas. But it is essential to select the right painting materials to create particular features. Three things that influence the choice of an artist paint brush is its ability to make a single point, its capacity of holding paints and its relative elasticity.

Let’s find out the various shapes of artist paint brushes that are available in the market.

  • Round or pointed tip: These are excellent for doing the detailed works during sketching. You can use them for filling small areas, outlining, creating thin to thick lines, etc. Round shaped types are best to use with thin paints rather than thick ones.

  • Pointed round type: It has got sharp pointed tips and is narrower than a round paint brush. It serves best when used for painting delicate areas, retouching, creating fine lines, detailing and spotting.

  • Flat shaped: This particular type is perfect for doing varnishing. These are available in square end and are provided with medium to long hair types. They are the right selection for creating bold strokes, filling, washes, stripes, straight edges and edges for fine line.

  • Filbert type: They generally have flat and oval shape and are provided with medium to long hair. These are appropriate to use for blending and finishing any soft edges. The round shape helps to carry out the detailing works and the flat shape helps to cover more space compared to a round one.

  • Angular flat shaped: It is a flat brush provided with angled hair at the end. These are best for creating curved strokes, filling corners and small areas. These are done with the help of the sharp tips. Like flat brushes, they can also cover a wider space.
