Importance of Developing Self-Esteem in Children

Self esteem is one of the mainsprings, which slates each and every child for failure or success as a human being. So, it is an important job for parents and teachers to build self esteem in every child. As parents, our role is even greater than that of the teacher’s.

A self esteem of a child starts to be formed in his or her early stage and gets created almost every day. It comes from learning to acknowledge who we are by observing the insufficiencies but still preferring to like ourselves. Each and every child’s self esteem develops with experiences of interactions by positive words. It’s essential to develop a child’s belief that he or she can handle his or her own life well. The emotional health of a child actually depends upon their self esteem.

You may ask now how to develop a child’s self esteem in a positive way. Experts however disagree on the basic psychological needs for developing self esteem. According to Jade Couquaux, a professional psychologist in Bondi, the basic ones are to feel capable and lovable. Another expert in New South Wales said that encouragement and freedom are the two main things for building self esteem.
Here are a top five important steps, which parents as well as teachers should take to establish self esteem.

  • Listen to and try to acknowledge the feelings and thoughts of your child
  • Create situations which will help your little one experience success and not failure
  • Give the child a feeling of some sort of reasonable control in his or her life
  • Emphasize on the fact that your child is capable and loveable
  • Show your little one that you’ve positive feelings about yourself

There are also several things that you can do as a parent to foster self esteem. You should always look at your child as a unique being and always encourage them when they are doing things that are appreciable. Give them the freedom so that they make mistakes. Have realistic expectations from them and if sometimes they are having any kind of unpleasant feelings, teach them how to deal with those.
